I recently had the distinct honor of photographing a beautiful proposal for Matt and Kristin at Willamette Valley Vineyards, a stunning location just 15 minutes south of Salem, Oregon. After dating for eight wonderful years, Matt decided it was finally time to pop the question. I was thrilled to be part of this momentous occasion, capturing memories that will last a lifetime.

 

Why Willamette Valley Vineyards?

Willamette Valley Vineyards is not just a beautiful place; it’s a magical setting that holds a special charm for couples. Perched atop a hill overlooking the breathtaking Willamette Valley, the vineyard offers panoramic views that create a romantic backdrop unlike any other. The venue’s special proposal package includes a private balcony, which was the perfect setting for Matt’s romantic gesture. I collaborated closely with the vineyard’s event coordinator to ensure every detail was meticulously planned, from the setup of the champagne to the perfect spot for the proposal.

Setting the Scene

 

Arriving about 15 minutes early, I had the opportunity to meet with the event coordinator to go over final details. I also scouted for the best hiding spot to ensure that I wouldn’t be seen before the big moment. I found refuge in the barrel room, surrounded by rows of aging wine barrels. The atmosphere was filled with the rich aroma of wine, adding a unique touch to the experience.

As Matt and Kristin arrived, I could feel the excitement in the air. Kristin’s expression changed instantly when she saw the champagne and elegant glasses set up on the lower balcony. Her face lit up with surprise and joy, a perfect prelude to the unforgettable moment that was about to unfold.

The Proposal Moment


When the moment finally arrived, Matt dropped to one knee, and I could see the sheer joy radiating from Kristin. She was practically bouncing with excitement, and her immediate “yes!” echoed through the vineyard. The couple embraced, and as they did, applause erupted from guests on the upper balcony who had been watching the entire event unfold. Kristin couldn’t help but show off her stunning engagement ring, and the joy in that moment was palpable.



After their heartfelt embrace, the couple celebrated with a glass of champagne, soaking in the sweetness of their engagement before we took a few moments to capture some portraits.

My Photography Style


For moments like proposals, my photography style leans heavily toward documentary. I meticulously plan my positioning to capture every angle without intruding on the couple’s intimate moment. I believe that these experiences should be authentic, so I prefer not to give too much direction. Instead, I encourage the proposer to offer me a signal—like a hug—just before the proposal, ensuring I'm ready to document the magic as it happens.

Capturing Candid Moments


Once the couple had a moment to revel in their new engagement, we took a leisurely stroll around the vineyard for some portraits. This time allowed them to relax and enjoy each other’s company. To capture beautiful candid moments, I provided simple prompts. For example, I asked them to “pretend to dance like no one’s watching” and to “hold hands and imagine what your honeymoon will be like.” These prompts worked wonders in eliciting genuine emotions, creating beautiful images filled with love and laughter.

Ideal Lighting for Photography


The session took place shortly after noon, and I was grateful for the abundant natural light flooding the vineyard. Natural light is my preferred method for shooting, as it enhances the beauty of the surroundings and adds a soft, romantic glow to the photos. The combination of the vineyard's stunning landscape and the perfect lighting created an idyllic setting for capturing these cherished moments.

The Joy of Engagement Photography


Engagement sessions are not just about capturing a moment; they are a celebration of love, commitment, and the journey ahead. As a photographer, my goal is to create a comfortable environment where couples can express their love for one another authentically. The joy and excitement that Matt and Kristin shared during their session exemplified this perfectly, reminding me why I love what I do.
